Think recycling can save us from plastics? Well, better think again!

Join Surfrider Santa Barbara for our October General Meeting for an alarming and informative look at the realities of recycling, with two distinguished guest speakers: Professor Roland Geyer of UCSB and Carlyle Johnston from County Public Works. The meeting is open to all, and as always there will be pizza and light refreshments. We will also hold a brief election for the upcoming year's Executive Committee members.

Carlyle
Johnston
is a Project Leader with the Santa
Barbara County Public Works Department, Resource Recovery & Waste
Management Division.

Carlyle
manages the commingled recycling contracts for Santa Barbara County as well as
a number of cities within the County, including both Santa Barbara and Goleta.
Carlyle has been working in environmental policy for over 20 years both locally
and in the San Francisco Bay Area. A native of Santa Barbara who graduated from
Santa Barbara High School, he also has a BA in politics from UC Santa Cruz and
a Masters of Public Administration from the Maxwell School at Syracuse
University.

Roland
Geyer
is Professor at UCSB’s Bren School of Environmental
Science and Management. Prior to joining the Bren School, he held research
positions in Germany, France, and the UK. Since 2000, he has worked with a wide
range of governmental organizations, trade associations, and companies on
environmental sustainability issues. Roland has won multiple awards for his
work, such as the International Statistic of the Year, and been featured widely
in such media as CBS 60 Minutes, CBS Sunday Morning, and PBS News Hour. He has
a graduate degree in physics and a PhD in engineering. Learn more about Roland
