Join Surfrider Santa Barbara for the October General Meeting & Mixer on Thursday, October 19th, 7:00 pm, at the Watershed Resource Center, Hendry's Beach. Meet other surfers and environmentalists and see an extremely interesting presentation by Cassie Burdyshaw. As always there will be pizza and light refreshments.
Cassie Burdyshaw is the Advocacy & Policy Director for Turtle Island Restoration Network. Cassie’s advocacy for sea turtles and other marine species began with her work as a community environmental conservation volunteer in the Peace Corps, where she facilitated sustainable rural community development through sea turtle conservation work in Central America. She has also lobbied in D.C. with Marine Fish Conservation Network to protect policies that protect our oceans. At Turtle Island Restoration Network, Cassie’s work focuses on safeguarding ocean wildlife from irresponsible commercial fishing methods. Turtle Island Restoration Network recently launched a boycott of unsustainably-caught swordfish. The boycott targets swordfish caught with lethal longlines and deadly drift gillnets – fishing methods that catch, kill, and waste a lot of ocean animals beyond the swordfish they’re trying to catch.
California consumers and businesses (and activists!) hold the key to stopping irresponsible commercial fishing. You can find out more about the boycott at: https://seaturtles.org/take-action/swordfish-boycott/
