In 2015 the Vancouver Island Surfrider Chapter in British Columbia joined a decades long effort to convince the City of Victoria to build a sewage treatment plant and start treating its sewage before discharge into the Straits of Juan de Fuca. The Chapter brought new energy, tactics and audiences for the Victoria Sewage Treatment Alliance, and ultimately they succeeded in convincing the Capital Regional District to build and operate a sewage treatment plant with tertiary treatment. Construction began on this plant in April 2017, and the plant should be operational by 2020. This is great victory for the Vancouver Island Chapter and our members stateside as pollution knows no boundaries.
